A general pedagogical introduction to renormalization theory is given. Problems arising in renormalization of gauge invariant theories are discussed. Different renormalization schemes are reviewed. A new renormalization scheme which allows to use arbitrary intermediate regularization and provides automatically gauge invariance of renormalized observables is described.
